History

In 2012, our Ayurveda Health Centre celebrates its 25 years!

Seelisberg is a small typical village in Canton Uri, Central Switzerland. It's an historical place, connected to the very identity of the Swiss people (the famed " Rütli " where the Confederation was founded in 1291 is at a viewing distance, down below the garden-terrace, near the lake). It is also a place of pilgrimage for Catholics (the small and beautiful Maria Sonnenberg chapel is 50 m away from the Centre).

The place was chosen by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 70's to establish Maharishi European Research University (MERU), which receives students of Vedic Knowledge from all over the world.

MERU is located in the old Grand Hôtel Sonnenberg, built in the 19th century, originally a palace for the high society of the times. The Palace was already offering to its clients the comforts of a Spa, probably among the first of the times !

MERU has been the host of many international conferences and symposia in the 70's and 80's, where renowned scientists and experts - some of them Nobel Prizes - came at the invitation of Maharishi to present their field and confront it to the Vedic wisdom.

It is in 1987 that Dr Oliver Werner opened the first ayurvedic treatment rooms in Seelisberg. Since then the Health Centre has received many thousands guests.
